Botox is used for the successful treatment of facial wrinkles. There are also other brand names, such as Dysport and Xeomin. We use both Botox and Xeomin because of their safety and effectiveness.
Botox and Xeomin are most often used on forehead lines, the lines between the eyes, known as the glabellar region and crow's feet (lines around the eyes). Wrinkles in other areas of the face are not usually amenable to this treatment and are more commonly treated with creams, lasers, or fillers.
How is Botox Administered?
Getting Botox or Xeomin takes only a few minutes and doesn't require anesthesia. They are injected with a fine needle into specific muscles with only minor discomfort. It generally takes 7 to 14 days to take full effect, and it is best to avoid alcohol starting at least one week before the procedure. You should also stop taking aspirin and anti-inflammatory medications two weeks before treatment to reduce bruising.
The effects of Botox and Xeomin will typically last four to six months. As muscle action gradually returns, the lines and wrinkles begin to reappear, and additional treatments will be necessary if one wants to maintain the previous effect. The lines and wrinkles often appear less severe with repeated treatments because the muscles are being trained to relax.
Substances that increase risk of bruising, such as blood-thinning drugs (Coumadin), Vitamin E, aspirin, Motrin, and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs 7 days prior. (Please do not stop taking medications unless you first speak with your health care provider. Stopping your medications can potentially cause health complications.)
