Dermal fillers are an injectable cosmetic treatment that can help eliminate wrinkles on the face and other parts of the body. These treatments aren’t permanent, but they can last a long time and be repeated as necessary.

What are Dermal Fillers?

Also called hyaluronic acid fillers, dermal fillers are a line of cosmetic products that use naturally occurring substances to rejuvenate skin and reduce fine lines. Hyaluronic acid, the main compound in dermal fillers, is a natural component of skin. Naturally, hyaluronic acid supports the skin and helps keep it hydrated. As we age, many of our body’s defenses and maintenance systems slow down, and hyaluronic acid is less abundant in skin. As a result, skin can look sallow, develop wrinkles and fine lines, and become more dry. All of these factors add up to make skin look aged, and we can often look older than we feel. Dermal fillers are injected into the face and other areas of the skin to help restore its original luster. Acting as a jump-start and supplement to skin’s hyaluronic acid production, dermal fillers fill in sunken skin and rehydrate lines and cracks.

Different Dermal Fillers and What They Treat Best

There are a few dermal fillers from different companies out there, and they can all treat different areas and aging symptoms.

Restylane, formerly known as Perlane, is a product line that treats wrinkles of the face and hands. It can also help restore and enhance the fullness of lips, leaving them looking silky and smooth. Juvederm is another product for treating and smoothing wrinkles. While it can treat a variety of fine lines and wrinkles, Juvederm is specialized to treat wrinkles in the cheeks. Radiesse is a dermal filler that actually doesn’t use hyaluronic acid. Instead, Radiesse uses gel microspheres that are made of calcium hydroxyapatite to help strengthen and support skin. It can help stimulate the skin’s production of collagen as well, which is a building block in healthy, smooth skin. Radiesse can treat sagging skin on the face and hands.

How Do Dermal Fillers Perform and How Long Do They Last?

Dermal fillers aren’t the only cosmetic treatment for wrinkles that are available at your dermatologist’s office. Unlike surgical options, dermal fillers don’t require local anesthesia or incisions that can cause scarring and infection. Dermal fillers are about as effective as other injectable treatments, like BOTOX, but most have a more natural approach than BOTOX does. BOTOX seeks to temporarily freeze muscles, which can reduce crow’s feet, laugh lines and other wrinkles caused by repeated facial expressions.

Dermal fillers don’t last forever, but their effects are fully noticeable within a few weeks and last up to a year. Fortunately, dermal filler treatments can be treated and maintained as necessary. Depending on the severity of your wrinkles and fine lines, you might need more frequent treatments than others.
