The New Year is a time for change, but the winter weather is unfortunately sticking around for the foreseeable future. Here are some of the best winter skin treatments to try in 2022.
Winter isn’t the time of year most often associated with sweating, but it’s the perfect time to think about putting an end to your excessive sweating. For people with hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, seasons don’t matter much when it comes to perspiration. Hyperhidrosis most often affects the hands, feet, face, and underarms because that’s where the most sweat glands exist. Hyperhidrosis generally has no trigger, meaning excessive heat or exercise might make it worse, but it’s not why you’re sweating excessively. Doctors believe it’s related to an issue within the nervous system, which tells the body to produce more sweat than is necessary.
A popular treatment for excessive sweating is called miraDry, and this winter is as good a time as any to give it a try. Focusing on the underarms, the miraDry device exposes the sweat glands to intense heat in quick bursts. The goal is to disable the sweat glands here permanently. After a few treatments with miraDry, many people notice a significant, if not a complete cessation of underarm perspiration. In addition to eliminating sweat, you get the added bonus of odor elimination. The treatment is quick and usually painless. A local anesthetic is applied to the treatment area before treatment to make sure it’s as comfortable as possible. Side effects are possible but are usually minimal and include temporary swelling and tenderness. In rarer cases, the skin may feel numb or tingly for a while after treatment. This will usually fade in a few weeks. As with any cosmetic treatment, it’s important to weigh the pros and cons with your dermatologist.
CO2 resurfacing may sound a little daunting, but it’s a fairly simple procedure that can actually treat many conditions. One of the best things about CO2 resurfacing is how effective it is in treating wrinkles and fine lines. As we age, our skin loses some of its elasticity and moisture retention, making it sag and thin. Treating these wrinkles and fine lines takes more than a good moisturizer, and CO2 resurfacing is a great candidate for helping reduce the appearance of aging skin. CO2 resurfacing uses a laser and the gas carbon dioxide to superficially damage the skin. CO2 lasers specifically are ablative lasers, meaning they penetrate to deeper layers of skin than other lasers. Once the skin is damaged, a few things happen: the aged, topmost layers of skin die and will slowly fall away, your skin focuses extra attention on healing, and the production of useful substances like collagen and elastin are jump-started. Because CO2 resurfacing is ablative and relatively intense for laser therapy, a topical anesthetic or general sedative may be necessary to ensure your treatment is comfortable. CO2 resurfacing is more than just a wrinkle treatment too. It can also help reduce the appearance of enlarged pores, acne scars, hyperpigmentation, and many other cosmetic issues.
CoolSculpting isn’t strictly limited to helping your skin, but it is a dermatological treatment that can do wonders for your self-esteem. CoolSculpting is for treating stubborn body fat, which is body fat that lingers in spite of a healthy lifestyle. Some people carry fat differently than others, and it’s beyond our control. It’s usually a hereditary thing; some people just have more fat in their abdomen, arms, legs, or chin than others. If you’re in good shape and still struggle with a little bit of fat, CoolSculpting may be for you this winter. The device used in CoolSculpting uses vacuum technology to draw skin toward a cooling element. Fat cells are particularly susceptible to cold and are killed off by the device. The fat cells are then absorbed by the body, and you see a gradual reduction in the appearance of unwanted body fat. Side effects are minimal, and the downtime associated with treatment is very limited. If you’re feeling sore, take a day or two off of vigorous exercise. After a few treatments, you should see a visible reduction in stubborn body fat, making you ready for spring and summer at the beach and poolside.
