 3 Tips to Remove a Double Chin

What Causes a Double Chin?

Fat stores referred to as submental fat are to blame for your double chin. That’s why a double chin is sometimes more politely referred to as ‘submental fullness.’

While fat is the cause of a double chin, there are certain factors that can make it more pronounced. Poor posture can actually increase the size of a double chin. If you frequently slouch or look down at your phone, the muscles in the chin area of your neck weaken and sag. Fixing your posture is not a double chin cure, but improving it can lessen the appearance of a double chin and help in many other ways.

Genetics and aging can also work together to make a double chin appear more defined. If your parents, uncles, aunts or grandparents had double chins despite general fitness, you are more likely to have one. Genetic contributions to fat storage aren’t fully understood, but there’s a good deal of evidence to suggest that fat concentrations are somewhat predetermined by our genes. Additionally, as a person ages their skin loses its elasticity and begins to sag and wrinkle. When skin in the submental area sags and loses its shape, it can make submental fat more pronounced and obvious.

Tip #1: Examine your diet and exercise

There aren’t any machines at the gym that target submental fat. Most of your workouts will target stubborn fat in areas like the abdomen, but ignore the double chin area. There are actually exercises out there that can target a double chin, and most have the added benefit of improving your posture.

Kissing the sky, whistling at the ceiling and moving around the world are all viable exercises to strengthen muscles in the submental area. While the names are silly, they’re a good description of the exercise. Whistling at the ceiling and kissing the sky involves looking up, puckering your lips and flexing jaw and chin muscles. Try it for a second, and you can feel the muscles working.

Cutting out certain foods or avoiding water retention can also make your double chin smaller. The best way to prevent your body from retaining water is actually to drink more water. If you aren’t drinking the recommended 3 to 4 liters of water a day, you’re not doing yourself any favors. Staying hydrated will keep you healthy in a number of ways, but it may also keep water from being retained in submental fat. Eating fewer salty and processed foods will also help prevent you from retaining excess water.

Tip #2: Treat the Aging

Aging skin makes double chins bigger and more obvious. Consider the many noninvasive methods for treating aging skin that can help your skin all over your face, like Botox and collagen induction therapy. If skin tightens in the chin area, your double chin will shrink.

Not every anti-aging skincare method works for double chins, though, and depending on how the rest of your skin looks, anti-aging treatments might not be your best option. Many topical creams out there promise to melt away double chins. But few (if any) of these products have been evaluated by the FDA to actually treat a double chin, so it’s far from a sure thing. It’s important to consider the ingredients of any topical creams or ointments to prevent any skin damage. Some products can even dry skin out, making aged skin more pronounced.
