Accutane (Isotretinoin)

If you have severe acne that has not responded well to over-the-counter treatment, or other prescribed medications, your dermatologist may recommend Accutane (Isotretinoin).

Accutane is vitamin A that can be taken orally to treat severe nodular acne. It works by reducing the amount of oil released by oil glands in your skin, and helps your skin renew itself more quickly.

Most patients see results after several months of taking Accutane, including significant clearing of nodular acne breakouts, which leaves the skin looking smoother and more refreshed.

Because this is a potent acne medication, your dermatologist will recommend a specific dosage of Accutane based on your height, weight, and skin conditions. Let your dermatologist know of any allergies you have, any medications you're taking, and if you are pregnant or may be pregnant.

When used as directed, many patients are delighted with the results of their Accutane treatment. One to two courses of treatment may be necessary before you see full results. Keep us apprised of any changes or side effects you experience. We are ready to help you feel more confident with this effective treatment for nodular acne. Ask your dermatologist about Accutane at your next appointment.
