Before

Testimonials
It
permanently removes localized accumulations of fat that prove impossible
to eliminate with exercise and diet. Liposuction sculpts, defines and
contours your body resulting in dramatic changes in the body's silhouette.
In effect, liposuction is equivalent to being able to focus the effects
of dieting to specific areas of the body.
As
long as you don't gain excessive amounts of weight after the procedure,
fat cells removed by liposuction will not grow back! If you are considering
liposuction, this on-line brochure provides a basic understanding of the
procedure when it can help, how it is performed and the results
you can expect. Please also consider the brief, but detailed, Important
Information About Liposuction By The Tumescent Technique, as it may help
to answer any questions you may have. If you would like some further information
regarding the Liposuction procedure NDA offers, please feel free to contact
one of our offices or by e-mail.
WHAT
IS LIPOSUCTION?
The concept of liposuction is surprisingly simple. Liposuction is a technique
that improves the body's contour by removing excess fat from fatty deposits
located between the skin and muscle. Liposuction involves the use of a
micro tube, called a cannula, which is connected to a powerful suction
machine and inserted through very small skin incisions. The removal of
fat is accomplished as the suction cannula creates tiny tunnels through
the fatty layers. After the procedure, these tiny tunnels collapse resulting
in an improved body contour.
AREAS
TREATED BY LIPOSUCTION
The most frequently treated areas in women are the abdomen, hips, thighs,
knees, calves, ankles and chin. In men, the commonly treated areas include
the "love handles", abdomen, breasts and the neck and chin.
The best candidates for liposuction are those in good physical and mental
health who have realistic expectations from the procedure. There is no
definite age, or weight limit for liposuction. It is important to emphasize
that liposuction is not a treatment for obesity, nor is it an effective
last resort for people who are unable to maintain a reasonable weight
by dieting. However, a somewhat overweight person, whose weight has been
stable for many years, and who has certain problem areas of fat, may be
an excellent candidate for liposuction.
THE
TUMESCENT TECHNIQUE
Tumescent liposuction is performed using only local anesthesia. This technique
is now considered the safest form of liposuction for removing large amounts
of fat because there is virtually no blood loss. In fact, the average
patient loses less blood during the procedure than they do at the time
of their routine preoperative laboratory studies. Not only has the Tumescent
Technique proven to be safer than the standard technique using general
anesthesia, but it also has proven to be less painful, decrease post-operative
recovery time and produce optimal cosmetic results. Local anesthesia used
in the Tumescent Technique is so effective that patients no longer need
intravenous sedatives, or narcotic analgesics.
RISK
OF ANY SURGERY
As with any procedure, liposuction has certain common side-effects such
as bruising, swelling and temporary numbness. Although irregularities
of the skin are possible following liposuction, this is minimized by the
micro cannulas used. Because of the slow resolution of post surgical swelling,
the ultimate results following liposuction usually require 12 to 16 weeks
to become fully apparent. Nevertheless, patients can usually see dramatic
improvements within two to four weeks after the procedure.
QUICK
RETURN TO NORMAL ACTIVITY
Patients are able to return to normal physical activities shortly after
their surgery. There is no limitation to physical activity other than
what common sense would dictate. Some patients are able to return to jogging,
golf, light aerobic exercise within a day or two after the procedure.
Some patients do find the soreness after surgery more significant than
others, but on average, most patients are quite surprised at how quickly
they are able to return to normal activities.
