BOTOX Botox
injections are a highly safe and effective treatment used to soften expression
lines and wrinkles. It is most commonly used on the forehead, crows
feet and the vertical furrow between the eyebrows. Botox works by partially
blocking the impulses from the nerve to the facial muscles related to
our expressions. When the muscles do not contract as much, the skin stays
smooth and unwrinkled. The result is that the worried, angry or tired
look gives way to a softer, more relaxed and pleasant appearance. Botox
is manufactured by and is a trademark of Allergan Corporation. It is a
highly purified botulinum toxin produced by the same bacteria that causes
botulism. Botox has been used for more than ten years to treat ophthalmologic
conditions, muscle spasms and dystonias. Its cosmetic value was discovered
as an inadvertent, secondary benefit. People who were getting Botox injections
for ophthalmologic conditions noticed that their wrinkles disappeared.
In April 2002, Botox was approved by the FDA for cosmetic use. Botox injections take about 15 minutes and the discomfort associated with the small needle is minimal. The results can sometimes take a few days to be completely noticeable. The effects typically last somewhere between 3-5 months. However, after repeated treatments the duration of its effectiveness is prolonged, because the muscles are not contracting and injections are not needed as frequently. The
possible complications associated with Botox include slight bruising,
or bleeding at the injection site. Depending on the muscle that is injected
there is a rare possibility that a drooping of the eyelid or an unevenness
of the brow can develop. This result is temporary and completely reversible
and does not last more than a few weeks. The cost for Botox treatments depends on how many areas being treated. Your doctor will quote you a price before the treatment. However, the cost is generally in the range of $450. Botox injections for cosmetic use are not covered by insurance.
